At this time of year, the olive trees hang heavy with fruit, their silvery leaves shimmering in the soft Mediterranean light. Walking through the groves near my home on the Costa Brava, I’m always struck by the harmony of subtle greens, warm greys, and the burnt amber tones of the soil.

This latest work — acrylic on canvas, 80 x 80 cm — is an abstract response to that quiet beauty. It’s about the balance between nature’s stillness and its abundance, the calm rhythm that fills the air during the olive harvest season.

Work in Progress

The piece began in the studio with layers of translucent olive tones — mixed greens, soft umbers, and the occasional blue to cool the palette. The process involved experimenting with diluted acrylics, letting them settle and blend like the shifting shades of the groves themselves.

The early stages — mixing and testing colour tones inspired by fresh olives.

Work in progress on the terrace — capturing the soft greens and muted light of the olive season.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on a new trio of paintings inspired by one of my favourite places on the Costa Brava — the beach at Cala de Grit. It’s a place where time seems to slow, where the sea shapes every stone, and the light shifts constantly across the water’s surface.

These new works explore the quiet language of the shoreline — the rhythm of waves moving over stones, the shimmer of light as it bends and refracts through shallow water, and the subtle hues that emerge in those fleeting moments between movement and stillness.

Each painting draws on the textures and colours of the beach itself — soft greys, muted ochres, and deep marine blues mingling with touches of metallics to suggest the glint of wet pebbles and the sun’s fleeting reflection on the tide.

Working here on the Costa Brava, I’m reminded daily how the sea defines everything: the air, the light, the pace of life. These pieces capture that intersection between water and land — a meditation on rhythm, reflection, and the quiet beauty found beneath the surface.

They mark a small turning point in my practice — a more grounded connection to this coast and to the material world just beneath the waterline.
